About the Choir
The Chagford Singers are a non-auditioning choir. This means that anyone can join without an audition. We welcome anyone to come along to rehearsals for a few weeks to see whether it is to their liking. We find that most people stay. We are a friendly informal group with fund-raising and social events including a party after each concert.
We are based in Chagford, a Stannary Town within the Dartmoor National Park in Devon and we draw our members from a wide surrounding area. The choir has about fifty members although not all sing in each concert. We celebrated our 20 th anniversary in 2010; we aim for a high standard in our performances, frequently performing with an orchestra and professional soloists.
Rehearsals are held every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Endecott House High Street Chagford. There is a subscription of £34 per term per singer, £58 for a couple and half price for those still in full-time education. The subscription includes all music hire and other costs.
Our conductor since 2004 has been Christopher Fletcher who is also Director of Music and Organist at Plymouth Roman Catholic Cathedral, Director of Music and Conductor of the Plymouth Philharmonic Choir and who also conducts the Stanborough Chorus, Kingsbridge in Devon.
Our accompanist for rehearsals is Jonathan Watts who also directs the Dartington Community Choir as well as pursuing a full-time career as a keyboard soloist.
Some members of the choir join Plymouth Philharmonic Choir in their annual summer tour, either in the UK or abroad.
